Noah william Mosher sr (1807-1872)

Lighthouse Keeper of Norwalk Connecticut U.S.A

Noah William Mosher was born on 22 October 1807 in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia. He was the eldest son of Jehu Mosher (1751-1851) and his second wife Eleanor Foley (1784-1867) making him a grandson of James and Lydia.

He lived in Nova Scotia for a long time and like many of his Mosher cousins were looking at progress, moving to the U.S.A. His mother Eleanor Foley was born in Rhode Island. Noah married Sarah Eliza Stillman (1812-1892) and they had 6 children, Rachel Salome, Omen Edward, Damaris Elmira, Clementine, Leander and Noah William Jr, all born in Nova Scotia.

On 30 September 1863 in the Register of Officers and Agents, Civil, Military and Naval Volume 1, Treasury Department, Lighthouses, lists Noah Mosher as the Lighthouse Keeper for Norwalk Lighthouse, paid $350 (p.a. I would say)

On 30 September 1865 in the Register of Officers and Agents, Civil, Military and Naval Volume 1, Treasury Department, Lighthouses, lists Noah Mosher as the Lighthouse Keeper for Norwalk Lighthouse, paid $350

On 30 September 1869 in the Register of Officers and Agents, Civil, Military and Naval Volume 1, Treasury Department, Lighthouses, lists Noah Mosher as the Lighthouse Keeper for Norwalk Lighthouse, paid $540

In 1870 the U.S. Census lists Noah Mosher aged 62 living in Norwalk, Connecticut, U.S.A and his occupation, Lighthouse Keeper. Noah William Jr aged 23 is listed as a Lighthouse Keeper also.

Noah William Sr died on 17 July 1872 aged 64 years, 8 months and 26 days, according to sources while on the job as a Lighthouse Keeper. His son Noah William Jr continued on as Lighthouse Keeper and is listed on 30 September 1873

The original photo of the Norwalk Lighthouse below is on the website and is from the period that Noah and his son Noah were in charge there.

NOAH WILLIAM MOSHER JR (1847 -1914)
LIGHTHOUSE KEEPER OF NORWALK CONNECTICUT U.S.A & ARTIST

Noah William Mosher was born in 1847 in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia. He was the youngest son of Noah William Mosher Sr (1807-1872) and Sarah Eliza Stillman. His family moved to the U.S.A. before 1860.
He married Susan M. Comstock in 1869 in Connecticut and they lived at the Norwalk Lighthouse with his parents. They had 2 children, Amanda born 5.7.1870 and Charles Snowdon born in 1872. Sadly Susan died after Charles was born. Noah then married her sister, Catherine Amelia Comstock (1855-1944). They had children Asa Hill, Naomi Ellen, Edward Anderson and Richard Ellison Mosher.

Noah did not remain as a Lighthouse Keeper and took up work as an artist. The evidence of this is his death notice in the Rochelle Pioneer Newspaper in 1914, where he lived at Davenport Neck. He had lived in New Rochelle for the 4 years before his death of Nephritis, inflammation of the Kidneys. His photo is listed below as well as photos of his paintbox and a known painting that are owned by a descendant. No other information regarding his artistic life have been found as yet.
