"Mabel spent her early years with family in Baltimore. She was first on the stage aged 17 where she became very popular as a stage and then screen actress. Aside from road tours, she appeared chiefly at the Bush Temple Theater in Chicago and at the Cresent Theater in Brooklyn. Among the productions in which she played leading parts were "Zaza", "Camille", "Madame X", "Butterfly on the Wheel", Master of the House" and also a number of Shakespeare revivals.

Popularity contests in Brooklyn netted her two automobiles as prizes. With the passing of youth Miss Montgomery continued on the stage in character parts. Gradually her appearances became less frequent but she never retired from the stage. To the very end she regarded herself as a professional actress and as such, maintained her active membership in Actors Equity."
